How to Ship Supplements Without Losing Product or Customers

Heat, expiry dates, and lot tracking are what make supplement shipping different. Here is how to pack them, stay compliant, and keep summer from eating your gummies.

Supplements are easy to ship badly. The bottles are sturdy, so nothing breaks, and that lulls sellers into treating them like t-shirts. Then a July heat wave turns a pallet of gummies into a brick, or a customer gets a bottle three months from expiry, and suddenly shipping is the problem.

I run a small 3PL in Warren, Michigan, and supplements are one of our core categories. We keep a dedicated climate-controlled room for exactly this product type. Here is what actually matters when you ship supplements, and what you can ignore.

What makes supplements different to ship

  • Heat sensitivity. Gummies, softgels, and probiotics degrade or melt in hot trucks and warehouses.
  • Expiry dates. Every unit has one, and customers notice when they get short-dated stock.
  • Lot numbers. If a batch ever gets recalled, you need to know exactly who received it.
  • Seal integrity. A popped safety seal means a returned order and a lost customer.

How to pack supplement orders

The physical packing is the easy part. Bottles ship well in a snug box with paper fill, and pouches do fine in padded mailers. The discipline is in what happens before the box: pick by FEFO (first expired, first out) so old stock ships first, check the seal and the lot number at the pack station, and keep the product out of hot storage between orders. In summer, ship early in the week so parcels do not bake in a trailer over the weekend.

Storage is most of the battle

Most supplement damage happens before the label is ever printed. Product sitting in a 95 degree warehouse in August loses potency and shelf life quietly. If your current setup is a garage or a standard ambient warehouse, that is the first thing to fix. We store supplements in a temperature and humidity controlled room, with FEFO and lot tracking handled by our WMS, so what ships is always the oldest sellable, freshest-tasting unit.

Do you need FDA registration to ship supplements?

You as the brand carry the compliance load for labeling and claims. Your fulfillment partner needs to handle the product responsibly: clean storage, lot traceability, and honest recall support. Ask any 3PL you are evaluating how they track lots and expiry, and walk away if the answer is a shrug.

FAQ

No special carrier rules apply to most supplements, but they need heat-aware handling: climate-controlled storage, FEFO picking so old stock ships first, and summer shipping habits that minimize days in transit.

Store them climate-controlled, ship early in the week, and use faster ground service on long summer routes. For extreme heat, some brands add insulated liners or cold packs on southern routes.

First expired, first out. The warehouse always picks the stock closest to expiry first, so inventory never quietly ages out and customers never receive short-dated bottles.
