ShipBob Alternative
for Small Brands

ShipBob is the name everyone mentions. For brands shipping 50–1,000 orders a month, the pricing structure works against you before you even get started.

Why brands are leaving ShipBob

ShipBob is a legitimate product. It handles volume well, has solid tech, and integrates with most e-commerce platforms. The problem is who it is designed for: brands already shipping at scale.

If you are in the 50–1,000 orders per month range, here is what actually shows up on invoices:

  • $275/month minimum regardless of volume. Ship 80 orders or 800, the floor is the same.
  • Per-unit receiving fees charged when inventory arrives, before a single order ships out.
  • Pick and pack fees that push per-order cost to $5+ at lower volumes when everything is added up.
  • Setup and onboarding fees before your first shipment goes out the door.

For a brand doing 200 orders a month, a $275 floor plus per-order fees can put fulfillment at 15–20% of revenue. That is a rough number when you are still in growth mode.

There is also a size issue that has nothing to do with money. ShipBob is a large national warehouse network. That is a real advantage at high volume. At 200 orders a month, you are a small account, and that affects how quickly problems get resolved.

What to actually look for in a 3PL

Not every alternative is a better fit. These are the questions that actually matter when comparing options:

  • No hidden receiving fees on standard DTC inventory
  • Transparent per-order pricing with published tiers
  • Experience with your product category
  • Direct access to the operations team, not a ticket queue
  • Flexibility at your current volume, not just your projected volume
  • Full FBA prep capability if you sell on Amazon

Where ShipLakes is the right call

We are not the right 3PL for everyone. Here is where we do our best work:

  • Health and beauty brands handling serums, supplements, skincare, candles, or anything fragile. We treat your product carefully, not just fast.
  • 50–1,000 orders per month. This is our designed range. You will not be a small account here.
  • Amazon plus DTC sellers. We handle FBA prep and DTC fulfillment from the same Warren, MI facility. No splitting inventory between two partners.
  • Brands switching from a 3PL that let them down. Lost inventory, billing surprises, unanswered emails. If that is your current situation, it is the exact problem we were built to fix.

The FBA prep piece

ShipBob offers some FBA prep capability, but it is not their core business. If you sell on Amazon and need compliant case packs, FNSKU labeling, polybagging, and bundling done consistently, you want a 3PL where FBA prep is a real service, not an afterthought.

ShipLakes offers full FBA prep at $1.00/unit base rate, with a one-time $175 onboarding fee for new FBA prep clients. Amazon and DTC run out of the same facility. When your channel mix changes in Q4 or during a promotion, you do not need to switch partners.

If you are new to FBA prep, our 2026 FBA prep guide covers Amazon requirements, what compliant packaging looks like, and what to ask any 3PL before signing.

What “no receiving fees” actually means

Receiving fees are one of the quieter ways 3PLs pad margins. A per-order quote looks clean on the proposal. Then the first invoice arrives with a line item for receiving, charged per unit, per box, or per SKU processed on arrival.

ShipLakes does not charge receiving fees on standard DTC inventory. The published rate is what you pay. Our full rate card is on the pricing page with no form required to see it.

How to find out if we are a fit

The fastest way is a 15-minute call. We will ask about your volume, product type, and current setup. We will tell you whether it makes sense, and if it does, exactly how to move forward.

We do not close on the first call. We qualify on the first call. No pitch deck, no automated follow-up. If we are not the right fit, we will say so and save both of us the time.

For most small brands, yes, especially under 500 orders per month. ShipBob’s $275/month minimum and per-unit receiving fees add up quickly at lower volumes. ShipLakes charges no receiving fees on DTC inventory and has published per-order tiers starting from $1.98/order on the Scale plan. The exact comparison depends on your volume and product mix. Contact us and we will run the numbers side by side with you.

Yes. Full FBA prep including FNSKU labeling, polybagging, bundling, and compliant case packs, alongside standard DTC fulfillment, from the same Warren, MI facility. FBA prep starts at $1.00/unit with a one-time $175 onboarding fee for new FBA prep clients.

Health and beauty, fragile goods, supplements, apparel, and candles are our core verticals. These are categories where packaging integrity matters as much as speed. We do not handle oversized freight, perishables, or food products.

Warren, Michigan, just outside Detroit. Single facility, which means consistent handling on every order. For Midwest brands, we are close to your supplier base. For national brands, our central location keeps ground shipping costs competitive across most of the continental US.
